Pam Thompson’s final gift ensures ongoing support for critical needs
Pamela Roth Thompson loved both people and laughter—in that order.
It is why the Covid pandemic that began in 2020 was difficult for Pam and so many others. The social distancing and separation for safety kept so many good friends apart and volunteer opportunities at bay. It was true for many people in Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Irving Healthcare Volunteers, of which Pam was the president at the time.
Yet, the disappointments and predicaments of the pandemic did not derail Pam’s plan to help her beloved hospital. Years before, she informed the foundation of her plans to leave a gift in her estate specifically to be added to the Greatest Need Endowment.
When she passed away earlier this year, she left her Irving condominium to the foundation to be sold, with proceeds being added to this endowment.
“This is truly a visionary gift,” explained Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation President John Drake. “Each year, in perpetutity, Pam’s gift will generate earnings that our hospital’s leadership can use to meet the community’s most pressing health needs. It may fund a piece of equipment, help improve the hospital or send nurses for continuing education. It will be used for whatever is most critically important each year.”
In addition to her home, Pam left appreciated stocks and jewelry, which the foundation will sell and add to the Greatest Need Endowment, as well. Pam knew the many facets of jewelry because she spent her professional career as a buyer for the U.S. Military Commissaries and Exchanges.
Her sister, Donna Neuberg, at a memorial luncheon for friends, recalled that Pam loved buying and selling jewelry for the military’s post exchange. She loved helping “her boys” in the military buy special order items, especially engagement rings.
Home was definitely where Pam’s heart was—and where her philanthropy was, too.
