A Home for Philanthropy

Pamela Roth Thompson loved both people and laughter—in that order. It is why the Covid pandemic that began in 2020 was difficult for Pam and so many others. The social distancing and separation for safety kept so many good friends apart and volunteer opportunities at bay. It was true for many people in Baylor Scott […]

Baylor Scott & White – Irving Community Clinic

Did you know Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents in the country? Texas also is one of the fastest-growing states, meaning there are […]

A Heart for Giving

A Heart for Giving

Philanthropy means “love of humankind.” By that definition, Burnell R. “Burnie” Stehman stands out as one of the most generous philanthropists in the history of Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation. Burnie’s philanthropy is exemplified by his deep affection for the community of Irving, where he moved in 1991 with his wife, Shirley. The couple […]

Five Stars. In many rating systems, it’s
a top score. Hotels and restaurants covet
five-star ratings and even our military sets
it as a pinnacle of positional authority—
Generally speaking. (See what I did
there?)

The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) for a fourth
consecutive year has recognized Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Irving as a “Five-Star Hospital.” That is a facility that has achieved the highest quality
rating from CMS, signifying excellent performance in areas like patient safety,
mortality, readmissions and patient experience.

My board colleagues and I could not be prouder of Irving’s only donor-supported hospital. One hundred percent of members on the foundation board
contributed to support our hospital in the business year that ended June 30, 2025. Our hospital board members also achieved 100 percent personal giving—
and even 28 percent of our employees contributed to support our foundation’s
efforts to help people live well.

I share these facts as a way of thanking YOU for joining us in giving. You
likely received this issue of The Compass because of a past gift you’ve given to
our foundation and we are so grateful. In addition to gratitude, we are proud to
share the informational graphics on the back page of this issue that explain exactly how we used gifts from our last business year to help our neighbors from Irving, Grand Prairie, Coppell and other DFW cities to live healthier lives.

Your gifts help ensure we can provide “five-star” services to everyone who
comes to us. Some people have many resources, some have none. But our
hospital is grateful for the chance to serve all who need us.

As you consider your year-end giving for 2025, I hope you’ll remember our hospital, clinic or Canine Companions in your plans. If the foundation staff or board can help you in any way, please reach out to us!

Gratefully,

Walter ‘Skip’ Wilson
Chair, Board of Directors
